Analysis of Preferences and a Sense of Healing among the Healing Gardens at the 2014 Korean Garden Show

  • 73

The purposes of the study were to examine how people perceive a sense of healing from healing gardens and to see the differences between designers and garden users. Also this study investigated not only the relationship between preference and a sense of healing but the effects of gender and childhood environment. First, the result showed that a sense of healing was closely associated with preference. Second, there is a discrepancy in gender; for female a sense of healing is more associated with rich and colorful garden while nature/wildlife and activeness appealed to male respondents. Third, respondents who spent their childhood in rural area felt more healing from traditional gardens than those in urban areas. Last, comfort and nature were common vocabularies for both designers and users, but it appeared that people did not get a sense of healing from memories of play or nostalgia as much as designers’ intentions. The results of the study would help designers have better understanding about users’ perceptions regarding healing gardens.
