A Study on the Conversions of ‘Gardening in a Lot’ of Small Sized Mixed-use Block: The Case of Whaseong-si Housing Development Block layering under Urban Design Guidelines

The purpose of the study is to analyze the realities of ‘gardening in a lot’ argued for its reduction or removal currently. The issue of ‘gardening in a lot’ has been discussed mainly under the point of urban administrative execution. In order to discover the new points of ‘gardening in a lot’, this study conducted case studies about small sized mixed-use housing block within planned new town district in detailed perspective. As a result, the significant gap between legislative meanings and overall realities of ‘gardening in a lot’ for securing a comfort, safety, esthetics, publicness and environment-friendly ecology were revealed. These causes based on orientations to pursuing economic feasibility of the individual lot, as well as inexperienced side of operation system such as inadequate urban design guideline. The result implies ‘gardening in a lot’ should overcome the limitation of passive management within building construction law and operate more efficiently than city planning.
