Vase Life and Quality of Cut Flower as Affected by Holding Solution Treatment of NaOCl, Sucrose, and Benzyladenine in Standard Chrysanthemum ‘Baekma’

This study was conducted to examine the effects of NaOCl, sucrose, and BA concentration as holding solution on quality and vase life of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora) ‘Baekma’. Fresh weight, flower diameter, total water uptake, and vase life in 0 or 200 mgㆍL⁻¹ NaOCl treatments decreased. The treatment of 50 mgㆍL⁻¹ NaOCl was the most effective for the quality and vase life of cut flower. In more than 3% sucrose treatments, fresh weight decreased because of low water uptake, and senescence and yellowing of leaves was promoted. The fresh weight and water uptake increased and the flowers were fully blooming in the 1% sucrose treatment. When more than 50 mgㆍL⁻¹ BA was treated in holding solution, senescence of leaves was rapidly progressed, and fresh weight and flower diameter decreased. The treatment of 25 mgㆍL⁻¹ BA prolonged the vase life and increased the quality of cut flower. Therefore, it was suggested that holding solution mixed with 50 mgㆍL⁻¹ NaOCl + 1% sucrose or 25 mgㆍL⁻¹ BA was the most effective for the quality and vase life of cut flower in standard chrysanthemum ‘Baekma’.
