Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the athletes medical service experience, the importance of each service recognized by athletes, the willingness to pay for each service. Methods A survey was conducted for athletes or parents who with young athletes as their children. We obtained a response rate of 98% (100 questionnaires were distributed) from five organizations. All questionnaires were self-reported. Results Athletes perceived less satisfaction with health services for diagnosis, injury prevention, and mental support than those received for sports injuries. Respondents were concerned about athlete-specific treatment & rehabilitation programs, suitable programs for young athletes, programs to prevent rehabilitation, and one-stop services for diagnosis-treatment-rehabilitation-injury prevention. However, respondents perceive that the part of the mental domain is important in the area of expertise (treatment / rehabilitation, prevention, mental domain) of the medical service, while the degree of actual experience and satisfaction with the experience are low. Most athletes answered that they would pay an additional 10% for an athlete-specific medical service. Conclusions This study provided basic data on the economic competitiveness of medical services provided in the field of sports medicine. More researches are required to explore the value of Korean sports medicine.
