The Review on the Treatment of Arthritis by Electroacupuncture

Objectives This study is to research the trend of the treatment of arthritis by electroacupuncture and to establish the hereafter direction for the study on electroacupuncture treatment on arthritis. Methods We reviewed recent 10 years(2002~2011) of english articles that provide full text on pub-med using the keyword electroacupuncture and arthritis . Result We have searched 11 articles. 1. Subjects of study were as follow: The studies on Osteoarthritis were 7, the studies on Rheumatoid arthritis were 3, The study on acute gouty arthritis was 1. 2. For Acupuncture point selection, 8 out of 11 studies used local points, making it more common than distant point selection. 3. The frequency applied was mostly under 10Hz and 2Hz was the most applied frequency. 4. Placebo acupuncture was used for control, but the methods were not consistent. 5. The most frequently adopted evaluation tools were Visual Analogue Scale and Numeric Rating Scale. Conclusion We were able to understand the tendency of electroacupuncture protocol of arthritis over last decade(2002~2011). To establish protocol for electroacupuncture on arthritis, we need more researches about electroacupuncture on arthritis.
