An Empirical Study of Direct Investment Performance of Korean SMEs in Qingdao, China

Since 2014, the Chinese government has been shifting the base of economic policy from the overseas markets to the domestic market in order to boost domestic demand. In this situation, Korean SMEs who have entered China can face great difficulties if they cannot cope with the rapidly changing investment environment. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the investment performance of Korean SMEs in Qingdao, China to effectively cope with such changes, and analyze what efforts should be made to improve their investment performance. Qingdao in Shandong Province plays a role as a bridge for bilateral cooperation between Korea and China. The empirical analysis confirmed that the company characteristics have a significant impact on both the product’s competitiveness and the investment performance. In addition, the local country characteristics do not significantly affect the competitiveness of products subject to overseas direct investment, but they have a significant impact on the performance of investment. Finally, local market’s environmental characteristics were found to have no direct impact on the performance of overseas direct investment.
