The main aim of this article is to use the traditional as well as the spatial dynamic shift-share method to analyze visitors changes to six mountainous national parks from 2010 to 2017. While shift-share analysis in the traditional formulation does not account for interactions across neighbouring regions, a spatial version enables us to overcome this drawback. The traditional shift-share analysis shows that the number of visitors increase in all of the six national parks, but the attraction for the mountainous national park decreases, indicating that the competitiveness of the regional national park plays a major role in increasing the number of visitors. This paper also reveals that the competitive effect not only is a good indicator but also explains much of the change in the number of visitors for Gyeryongsan and Wolchulsan national parks, while the national park effect accounts much for the change in the number of visitors for Deokyusan and Jirisan national parks. The results using the spatial dynamic shift-share method indicate that Wolchulsan national park succeeds in keeping a high competitive advantage, and the competitiveness of Songnisan and Naejangsan national parks has increased greatly. On the other hand, Gyeryongsan and Deokyusan national parks fail in escaping from competitive disadvantage.
