The aim of the current paper is to examine to what extent English-speaking learners of Korean were able to acquire the prosodic features of Korean. By using the L2KSC corpus (Rhee et al. 2005), we selected recordings of 30 English-speaking learners of Korean and analyzed the F0 values of the first and second vowels of target words. The recordings were conducted with learners at two levels of Korean proficiency - advanced and beginner - and each group had 7 male and 8 female speakers. The results showed that learners of Korean were able to produce the different pitch patterns of initial sounds, but this pattern varied as a function of proficiency level and gender. For male speakers, the advanced learners produced different pitch patterns as a function of the initial sounds of accentual phrases, while the beginner group did not show such a difference. For female speakers, there was no effect of proficiency, but they showed different pitch patterns as a function of initial sounds, although the difference was not as great as the male advanced group. These results suggest that the suprasegmental features of the native language influence the acquisition of L2 prosodic features, and that there may be a gender difference in learning prosodic features.
