Total of 69 open-pollinated family seeds were harvested from the clonal seed orchard of Pinus thunbergii, and planted at Jeju and Anmyon in 1992. When the progenies were 16 years old, height, DBH and volume growth were measured. The results showed that all traits measured were better at Jeju than Anmyon. Analysis of variance at both plantations showed that there were highly significant differences among families, among replications and family × replication interaction for all traits measured at both sites, only except among replications at Jeju. Combined analysis of both sites also showed significant differences among families and among replications, but site × family interaction was not significant, meaning that family growth pattern was similar at Jeju and Anmyon sites. Individual heritability at single site was estimated to be 0.245 in height, 0.203 in DBH and 0.257 in volume growth at Jeju, and 0.350 in height, 0.221 in DBH and 0.228 in volume growth at Anmyon, respectively. Based on combined analysis, heritabilities were 0.172 in height, 0.321 in DBH and 0.304 in volume growth. Realized gain was estimated to 11% in height, 32.1% in DBH and 82% in volume growth based on the comparing of progeny’s growth between seed orchard (selected) and natural stand (control). If there is 50% selection of superior clone (i.e., 50% genetic thinning), genetic gain could be estimated as 15.2% in height, 38.3% in DBH and 104.3% in volume growth.
