Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee is the most important pest of Zea may L. Little is known about combining ability for stem damage to this insect. The objective of this study was to estimate of resistance to stem damage by the Oriental corn borer. The importance of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for number of holes and tunnel length by borer was determined. GCA mean squares were 3.26, and 2.64 times greater than SCA mean squares. Thus, additive gene action was more important in number of holes and length of tunnel than other gene actions. Inbreds 1, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 14 showed negative GCA effects for stem damage by Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee. These inbred lines can be used for recurrent breeding methods to improve resistance to borer. Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee is the most important pest of Zea may L.
