A new wrinkled leaf shape and purple leaf color vegetable perilla cultivar, Neulbora

“Neulbora” is a new leaf vegetable perilla (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton) variety developed from a cross between Ipdeulkkae1/YCPL173 and YCPL199 at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, RDA, in 2005. Wrinkled leaf shape and purple color of both sides of the leaf are the distinguishable characteristics of “Neulbora”. The wrinkled leaf shape is similar with the shape of lettuce which is a major fresh vegetable for “Ssam”, meaning wrapping rice, meat or raw fish. The purple color on both sidse of leaf was expressed in all climate condition. The cultivar will meet the diverse demand of consumers, and be a new income source of farmers. Although leaf yield is less than that of check variety “Ipdeulkkae1”, leaf number is 7% higher than that of “Ipdeulkkae1”. “Neulbora” can be adaptable in whole area of South Korea.
