A new sesame cultivar, Kopoom with shattering resistance, high quality and yielding

  • 2

A new sesame variety “Kopoom” was developed from Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute in 2005. The cross was made by shattering resistance F1 hybrid of Dongro x SC645 to the high yielding capacity F1 hybrid of Yoosung x Mokpo 9, followed by pedigree selection, yield test and RYT by the sesame breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science and Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute up to 2005. The variety showed as high as about four times of shattering resistance and contained much more lignan compounds rather than those of check variety “Yangbaek”. Average culm length and numbers of capsule per plant were 124 cm, 76 respectively. It’s 1000 grains weight was about 2.48 g indicating 0.18 g lower than that of “Yangbaek”, and it s oil content was about 52%. “Kopoom” also contained total 9.28 mg/g of such lignans as sesamin and sesamolin. The average yield of “Koppom” was 92 kg per 10a at the national-wide regional performance. A new sesame variety “Kopoom” was developed from Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute in 2005.
