A single cross, “Cheongsaok”, is an yellow semi-dent maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2004. This hybrid, which has a high yield of dry matter, and total digestible nutrients (TDN), was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS55 and KS131. KS55 is the seed parent and KS131 is the pollen parent of “Cheongsaok”. Silking date of “Cheongsaok” is similar to that of check hybrid, Kwanganok. It is resistant to lodging. Staygreen of “Cheongsaok” do not differ greatly with that of Kwanganok. It has a longer ear than a check hybrid, Kwanganok. It is moderately resistant to Bipolaris maydis (southern corn leaf blight), Exserohilum turcicum (northern corn leaf blight), and corn borer but sensitive to black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV). Regional yield trial was conducted at four locations for four years. The yields of “Cheongsaok” in dry matter, TDN, and grain were 18.3 ton, 12.9 ton and 8.0 ton/ha, respectively, which were increased 7% and 7% compared with a check hybrid, Kwanganok, and was similar compared with a check hybrid for grain use, Suwon19. Seed production of “Cheongsaok” has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS55 and the pollen parent, KS131.
