“Hwaanbyeo” is an high quality, high yielding and cold tolerant rice variety adaptable to direct seeding rice cultivar developed by the rice breeding team of the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon from 1991 to 2000 and released in 2001. “Hwaan” is a japonica rice variety developed from F1 anther culture of a single cross between Suweon362 and SR10778-2-2. This variety has about 146 days of growth duration from seeding to heading and is the semi-dwarf type with 81cm in culm length. It has erect plant architexure, thick culm, and green leaves. It has good panicle shape with around 102 spikelets per panicle and rare awns. This variety is resistant to leaf blast, bacterial blight and stripe virus disease, but susceptible to other diseases and insect pests. Milled rice of Hwaanbyeo is transluscent with non-glutinous endosperm and medium small round-grain. The yield performance of “Hwaanbyeo” is about 5.26MT/ha at direct-seeding culture and 5.49MT/ha at ordinary transplanting culture respectively in the local adaptability test for three years. “Hwaanbyeo” would be adaptable to middle and southern plain of Korea for direct-seeding culture or transplanting rice culture.
