그럼에도 불구하고 남은 문제들: 문숙영(2009)를 중심으로

문숙영(2009)는 한국어 시제 범주 연구에서 몇 가지 중요한 성취를 이룬, 시제에 관한 종합적 논의라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 성취에도 불구하고 더 논의가 필요하다고 판단되는 두 가지 문제를 중심으로 문숙영(2009)를 비판적으로 검토하여 보았다. 하나는 문숙영(2009)의 상황시 체계에 관한 것이다. 문숙영(2009) 에서는 상황시 체계를 과거 대 비과거의 대립으로 보았다. 그러나 비과거를 나타낸 다고 본 ‘-느-’와 ∅는 한정된 미래 상황을 지시하고, 미래 상황 지시에 사용될 때맥락의 도움이 필요하다는 점에서 현재 시제 표지로 보는 것이 적당할 것이다. ‘-느 -’와 ∅의 함축적 의미가 모두 이들의 현재 지시 기능에서 비롯된다는 점도 현재 시제 표지로서의 타당성을 뒷받침한다. 따라서 한국어의 상황시 체계는 과거 대 현재의 대립을 이루며, 체계상의 빈칸인 미래 시제는 실현 가능성에 대한 화자의 판단에 따라 확실성이 높은 상황에 대해서는 현재 시제 표지로, 그보다 확실성이 낮다고 판단되는 경우에는 추측이나 의도의 양태 표지로 표시된다고 볼 수 있다. 다른 하나는 인식시에 관한 문제이다. 문숙영(2009)에서는 ‘-더-’가 가리키는 인식시를 시제 논의에 포함하지 않는다. 시제가 ‘-더-’와 같이 특별한 의미를 가지는 경우는 드물 며, ‘-더-’ 하나만을 위해 범언어적으로 통용되는 시제의 정의를 수정하는 것은 부담이 되기 때문이다. 그러나 ‘-더-’의 증거양태 의미와 인식시 지시 기능 중에 전형적 쓰임을 찾을 수 없다는 점, 그리고 한국어에서 ‘-더-’ 외에도 ‘-네’, 추측 표지와 결합한 ‘-었-’이 인식시를 가리킬 수 있다는 점에서 화자의 인식론적 의미를 나타 내는 구문에서의 시제로서의 인식시를 시제 논의 안에 포함시키는 것에 대해 고려할 필요가 있다.

This article critically reviewed Moon(2009), focusing on two issues. One is about the Moon(2009)’s situation tense system. According to Moon(2009), Korean has a tense system that distinguishes between past and non-past. But it is appropriate that ‘-ne-’ and ∅ are described as present tense markers. Because -ne- and ∅ indicate a limited future situation, and require specific context when used indicating future situation. Therefore, it can be seen that Korean has a binary tense system of past and present. Future situation, which is a systematic blank, is marked by -ne- and modality markers. Another is about the cognition time. In Moon(2009), cognition time of ‘-teo-’ was not included in tense. But we can not find the typical use of ‘-teo-’ between evidential meaning and indicating past cognition time and there are evidential markers indicating cognition time like –teo-‘ in some languages. In Korean, ’-ne’ and ’-eoss-’ combined with epistemic modality markers also indicate cognition time. So it is necessary to consider including the cognition time in the tense as the tense of constructions having epistemological meanings.
