미국 차터스쿨의 인성교육과 교과교육 통합 운영 사례 연구

Case Study on the Integrated Operation of Character Education and Subject Education in an American Charter School

이 연구의 목적은 인성교육과 교과교육을 통합적으로 운영하는 미국 차터스쿨 중학교를 질적 사례연 구방법론으로 접근하여 그 통합의 특성과 기제를 분석하는 데 있었다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 2017년 9월부터 12월까지 6명의 교원을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인성교육과 교과교육을 통합적으로 운영하는 가장 큰 특징은 인성의 개념을 관계적 인성과 수행적 인성으로 분류하는 것을 출발점으로 하는 데 있었다. 둘째, 인성교육과 교과교육을 통합하는 구체 적인 방안으로 교사는 교과 수업에서 학습목표와 함께 습관목표를 제시하고 이를 평가체제와 밀접하게 연계하고 있었다. 셋째, 인성교육과 교과교육의 통합적 운영은 독특한 소인수 학생의 교육조직인 Crew를 기반으로 하여 실체화되고 있었다. 넷째, 학교 전반적인 차원에서 인성교육과 교과교육의 통합적 운영을 총체적으로 지원함으로써 그 통합의 성과가 보다 효과적으로 나타나고 있었다. 이 연구의 결과는 우리나 라에서 인성교육과 교과교육을 통합적으로 접근하는 데 필요한 새로운 시사점을 제공한다.

The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristic and mechanism of the integrated operation between character education and subject education in an American Charter School by using Qualitative Case Study Method. The study conducted in-depth interviews with six teachers from September through December in 2017. The major results were as follows: First, the most important characteristic from the integrated operation was that it stood on the foundation which was a starting point, classifying the concept of character as relational character and performance character. Second, the specific method for the integrated operation was that teachers set up a Habits Target as well as a Learning Target for their class and connected them clearly with an assessment system to guide the class towards meeting the goals. Third, the integrated operation was actualized based on the unique educational organization such as Cure System, that consisted of a small number of students with each teacher. Lastly, the outcome of the integrated operation became effective because of the total support from all aspects of the school. The results of the study suggest implications for the integrated operation between character education and subject education in Korea.
