미국 중등 교사들을 통해 본 주제 중심 통합 교육과정에 대한 인식 및 관점

American Secondary School Teachers’Understanding and Perspectives on the Thematic Integrated Curriculum

최근 한국 교육에서 교육과정의 통합적 운영은 중요한 연구 주제중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 현재 우리나 라의 교육의 기본 방향 역시 단위학교의 재량권을 강화하고, 주제 중심 통합교육과정을 더욱 확대 운영 하는 형태로 나아가고 있다. 그러나 학교 현장에서 교사가 자율권을 가지고 교과를 통합적으로 운영하는 구체적인 정보와 사례는 여전히 부족하다. 또한 분과주의 형태로 교과가 제시되는 초등학교 고학년 수준 이상에서의 통합교육 운영 사례 연구는 매우 드물다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 단위학교 수준에서 주제별 교육과정 편성과 운영이 정착된 미국 중등학교에 대한 연구는 현재 통합교육과정이 초등학교 저학년 수준 에서 정부 주도로 제한적으로 이루어지고 있는 한국 교육 상황에서 다양한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다. 이에 본 연구는 미국 단위 중등학교 교사들이 주제별 통합교육과정을 편성하고 운영하는 사례를 발굴하고 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구는 교육과정 논의의 역사 속에서 제시된 통합 교육과정에 이상적 정의와 이에 따른 교사의 역할에 관한 논의를 중심으로 선행연구들을 검토하여 이를 이론적 틀로써 활용하였다. 미국 중서부 지역에서 5명의 중등학교 사회과 교사들이 면담에 참여하였다.

The integrated curriculum is one of the major research topics for Korean education. These days, Korean education is moving toward emphasizing the autonomy of a school unit and expanding the thematic integrated curriculum. However, there is a lack of information and examples of the integrated curriculum practiced by teachers with their autonomy. In addition, there are few studies focusing on the integrated curriculum practiced at the upper elementary school levels, which are given a separate discipline based curriculum. Thus, the study of American secondary schools which have designed and implemented an integrated curriculum is expected to provide insights for Korean education in which an integrated curriculum is practiced at the lower levels of elementary school by the government. In this sense, this study aims at presenting exemplary cases of American secondary school teachers who organize and practice the thematic integrated curriculum. This study also provides a theoretical framework by reviewing previous studies dealing with definitions of the ideal integrated curriculum and the expected teachers’ roles. Five social studies teachers of secondary schools in the Midwest regions of the US participated in the interview.
