창세기 37장 28절의 번역은 단어나 표현의 번역에 그치는 문제가 아니라, 그 맥락 속에서 이해되어야 할 문제다. 즉, 좁게는 창세기 37:18-36의 맥락 속에서, 넓게는 창세기 37-50장 전체의 맥락 속에서 그 의미를 찾아야 할 것이다. 이 본문들에 대한 해석의 방향에 따라서 28절의 번역도 이루어져야 하기 때문이다. 창세기 37:28의 주어를 ‘그들이’로 한다면, 미디안 사람들이 요셉을 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔고, 이스마엘 사람들이 그를 애굽에 데려가서 보디발에게 팔게 되었다는 이야기의 흐름이 자연스럽게 연결된다. 그렇지만 개역개정과 표준새번역에서처럼 주어를 ‘형들이’로 한다면, 르우벤이 구덩이가 비어 있는 것을 보고 당황했을 때 형제들이 아무런 이야기를 하지 않았던 것을 설명할 수 없게 된다. 더구나 MT에도 ‘형들이’라는 표현이 없다는 사실은, 주어를 ‘그들이’로 해야 한다는 것을 지지해 주고 있다. 요셉이 팔려간 사건을 기록한 창세기 37장 속에 두 가지의 자료층이 있다고 가정할 필요가 없으며, 28절의 번역은 ‘형제들이’ 아니라, ‘그들 이’ (미디안 사람들) 이 요셉을 저수조에서 끌어올리고 은 이십에 그를 이스 마엘 사람들에게 판 것으로 번역해야 할 것이다.

The translation of Genesis 37:28 is not only a matter of certain words and expressions, but also a matter of context. The current problem in the translation of 37:28 is the fact that the Korean Revised Version translated the subject ‘they’ to refer to ‘the Midianite traders.’ However, the New Korean Revised Version and the New Korean Standard Version identify the subject as ‘brothers’ in the same text and did not think the Midianites were the subject of the sentence. If we regards ‘they’ as the subject of v. 28, the stream of the story that the Midianites sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites and the Ishmaelites brought him to Egypt and sold him to Poti-phar there, would be coherent. However, if we make ‘the brothers’ as the subject of v. 28b, it is hard to explain why the brothers did not say anything about it when Reuben found out that the pit was empty and rent his clothes. Furthermore, in MT the word ‘the brothers’ is not used and it supports the position that the subject should be ‘they’ instead of ‘the brothers.’ Although we do not know the exact reason for the content that the Midianite traders sold Joseph to Poti-phar in 37:36, the possibility would be that the Midianites and the Ishmaelites were probably interchangeable at the time. In conclusion, we do not have to assume that there were two different sources in Genesis 37. It is correct to translate the text saying that the Midianite traders rescued Joseph from the pit and sold him to the Ishmaelites for 20 shekels. Therefore, all Korean translations should make ‘they’ the subject of v. 28b just like the Korean Revised Version. In the exegesis of the confusion aroundverse 37:36 is the result of the fact that two names for one people were used interchangeably. Later the texts say that Joseph talked about his brothers in Genesis 40 and 45 and they also support the translation of v. 28 as we suggest in this paper.
