Key Issues of Moon Ik Hwan’s Thoughts on Unification and Their Implications for the Present Situation of the Korean Peninsular

이 논문은 문익환의 통일 사상의 주요 쟁점을 검토하고 그 현재적 의의를 논한다. 문익환의 통일 사상에 대한 기존 연구는 그 역사적 발전 과정을 상세하게 해명했지만, 그 사상 체계에 대한 분석은 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 이 글은 문익환의 통일 사상을 변혁론, 통일 방법론, 실천론 등으로 나눠 설명했다. 문익환의 통일 사상은 변혁론에서는 민주와 통일의 병행 추진, 통일 방법론에서는 단계적 통일과 국가연합 단계의 도입, 실천론에서는 민이 주도하는 통일 과정을 핵심 내용으로 한다. 이 논문은 한반도가 대전환의 문턱에 서 있는 현 시점에서 문익환의 통일 사상이 중요한 의미를 갖고 있다고 주장한다. 첫째, 한반도 대전환, 즉 분단 체제를 극복하기 위해서는 내부의 사회 개혁이, 즉 민주화가 동시에 진행되어야 한다. 둘째, 남북 협력을 안정적으로 추진하기 위해서는 점진적이고 단계적인 남북 통합을 위한 방안에 대한 논의와 합의가 필요하다. 셋째, 남북 연합이 진전되면 민이 주도하는 통일 과정이 더 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 민관이 협력적 혹은 상호 보완적 관계를 구축하고 민이 주도하는 합법적 남북 교류 공간이 확대되기 때문이다.

This article analyzes key issues of Moon Ik Hwan’s thoughts on the Unification of Korea and discusses their implications for the present situation of the Korean Peninsula. Previous studies have mainly focused on the historical development of Moon’s thoughts regarding Unification and its theological background. But the system of Moon’s thought has not been studied seriously yet. Therefore, this article is trying to find out the system of Moon’s thought which it argues is based on a theory of social change, a theory of Unification, and a theory of practice for Unification. In the theory of social change, Moon empathized the importance of combining the task of Unification with democratization. In the theory of Unification, Moon was exploring the way to harmonize plans of Unification proposed by South Korea and North Korea. His theory is solely based on the interest of people in the Korean Peninsular. Moon proposed the Confederation of South and North as the first step of Unification. In the theory of practice for Unification, Moon argued the process of Unification has to be driven by public-private partnership and emphasized the leading role of people in this process. In conclusion, this article argues that Moon’s thought has very important implications for the present situation of the Korean Peninsular that is standing on the threshold of a new era.
