Linguistic Analysis of Double-Meaning of ἔρχομαι in Revelation

헬라어 단어 ἔρχομαι는 장소의 이동을 나타내는 동사로서, 신약성경에서 가장 많이 등장하는 단어 가운데 하나다(636회). 그런데 ἔρχομαι는 독특한 특성을 가지고 있는데, 이의성(二意性)이 그것이다. ἔρχομαι는 ‘오다’를 의미할 수도 있고, ‘가다’를 의미할 수도 있다. 내용적으로는 둘 중에 하나를 의미하지만, 형태적으로는 ἔρχομαι 밖에 없어서 구분할 수가 없다. 결국 성경을 번역할 때 내용을 고려해서 ‘오다’로 번역할 것인지, 또는 ‘가다’로 번역할 것인지를 그때그때 결정해야 한다. 본 논문은 우리말 문법에서 ‘가다’와 ‘오다’의 사용에 관한 기준들을 살펴보았다(이기동 1977, 전수태 1986, 이종열 1998). 또한 영어에 있어서 ‘come’과 ‘go’의 사용에 관한 기준들도 살펴보았다. 이를 통해서 우리말과 영어의 기준이 다르다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 논문은 ἔρχομαι가 우리말로 번역된 구체적인 사례 중에서 요한계시록을 선택하여, 36회 등장하는 ἔρχομαι 용례들이 우리말 문법의 기준에 부합하는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 우리말 성경에서 수정해야 할 부분들을 몇 군데 발견하였고, 우리말 문법에 부합하면서 내용전달을 효과적으로 할 수 있는 제안들을 제시하였다.

The greek word of ἔρχομαι is a verb that represents the movement of place. The word is one of the most frequent words in the New Testament(636 times). However, the word is difficult to translate, because it has two meanings which refers ‘come’ or ‘go’. Readers should decide the correct meaning whether it means ‘come’ or ‘go’ according to context. Firstly, I reviewed the criteria regarding the use of the words, ‘gada’ and ‘oda’, in korean grammar. In order to properly translate ἔρχομαι, the translation should be compatible with korean grammar. In addition, this paper also looked at the criteria for the use of ‘come’ and ‘go’ in English. As a result, we could see the different criteria between korean and english. This means that you should not refer to english translation when translating the word ἔρχομαι into korean. The study examined the uses of ἔρχομαι that appeared 36 times in Revelation. As a result, we found a number of expressions to be corrected in korean bibles. Thus, this study suggested some alternative expressions and a effective delivery of the meaning within the korean grammar.
