Beyond Luther’s Reformation: Commemorating Jan Hus and Czech Reformation

2017년은 마르틴 루터의 종교개혁 500주년이 되는 기념비적인 해임에도 불구하고, 이 논문은 종교개혁에 대한 신학적 성찰은 루터의 종교개혁이 여러 종교개혁들 중 하나라는 사실을 기억하는 것에서부터 시작해야 한다고 주장한다. 종교개혁은 단수가 아니라 복수다. 필자는 루터의 종교개혁의 성과와 동시에 그 한계를 언급하면서, 루터보다 100년 앞서 일어난 체코의 종교개혁, 즉 “유럽의 제1차 종교개혁”이라 불리는 원(原)종교개혁인 체코의 종교개혁과 그 중심인물인 얀 후스를 기억하고 기념하자고 제안한다. ‘믿음으로 의롭게 된다’는 교리의 문제에 집중한 루터의 종교개혁과 달리, 후스와 체코 의 종교개혁은 성만찬의 개혁에 중점을 두었으며, 성체성사에서 실체 변화가 일어난다는 가톨릭교회의 교리에는 의문을 표하지 않았지만, 그 기적이 왜 교회의 제단 위에서만 일어나야 하는지 물으며 교회의 담을 넘어 민중 속으로 들어가 ‘사회적 성만찬’을 실시하였다. 그럼으로써 교회의 개혁이 사회의 개혁과 불이(不二)임을 보여주었다. 필자는 바로 이러한 통전적 개혁을 한국교회와 신학, 특히 민중신학이 종교개혁의 원형과 모델로 삼아야 한다고 제안한다.

While 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, this article argues that reflection on the Reformation should begin by remembering that the Lutheran Reformation was only one of several Reformations. Noting both the achievements and the limits of Luther’s Reformation, the article proposes to remember and commemorate Jan Hus and the Czech Reformation, which took place a hundred years before Luther. Unlike Luther’s Reformation, which focused on the doctrinal issue of “justification by faith,” the Czech Reformation focused on the issue of the Lord’s Supper and practised a “social Holy Communion” beyond the boundaries of the church. The Czech Reformation, argues the article, can give a fresh new vision and inspiration to the contemporary Korean church and society, a perspective that sees church reform and societal reform not as two different entities but as one integrated reality.
