Sin and Pastoral Care

본 논문은 기독교 전통의 죄 이해를 목회적 돌봄과 관련하여 비판적으로 고찰하고자 한다. 어거스틴(Augustinus of Hippo) 이후 기독교 전통이 가져온 죄의 개념은 여전히 현대적으로 중요한 의의가 있지만, 죄의 전통적인 몇가지 견해들은 삶의 갈등 가운데 있는 사람들에게 지나치게 협소한 관점을 제공한다. 그 견해들이 사람들로 하여금 지나친 죄책감에 시달리게 하고 수 동적 태도를 갖게 하는 한편, 자신의 삶의 문제를 전체적으로 이해하고 적극적으로 대처하는 데 어려움을 갖게 하는 경향이 있음을 본 논문은 지적한다. 그리고 이러한 이론적 비판을 목회적 돌봄의 사례들에 구체적으로 적용하여, 죄에 대한 목회상담적인 분석을 시도한다. 이어서 본 논문은 사람들로 하여금 스스로를 전인적으로 받아들일 수 있고 삶의 상황들을 적극적으로 이해하고 대처할 수 있도록 돕기 위하여, 죄에 관한 목회적 돌봄의 관점을 어떻게 가지는 것이 필요할지를 제안할 것이다.

This article offers a critical appraisal of the Christian conception of sin in terms of pastoral care practice. The concept of sin is still considered to be significant for the people today, for it calls for their ethical accountability before God as the ultimate ground of life. However, the closed system of the traditional theism has emphasized the supernatural judgement of God, the penal substitution of Christ’s crucifixion, and the hereditary nature of original sin, which have tended to give people in conflict inappropriate guilt about trivial behaviors and passive attitude in life. I present two cases of pastoral care to show how the traditional conception of sin can impede parishioners’ constructive coping in life’s crisis. Finally I offer a few perspectives on sin to help parishioners cope with guilt in a healthier way.
