야훼의 이동식 신상으로서의 하나님의 궤

The Ark of God as YHWH’s Portable Statue

본 연구는 구약성경의 기록들과 고대 근동의 신상과 관련된 자료들 그리고 고고학 증거 등을 바탕으로 초기 이스라엘에서 하나님의 궤는 국가 축제일에 신이 주 성전을 벗어나 국가의 주요 성소들을 방문하며 행진할 때 사용하기 위한 이동용 신상이었고, 하나님의 궤의 덮개 위의 두 그룹 사이에는 야훼 하나님의 축소판 신상이 있었을 가능성을 제시한다. 본문에서 살펴 본 증거들은 이스라엘에서 하나님의 궤의 행진을 핵심으로 하는 행사들이 있었음을 보여준다. 특히 시편 47편과 132편 등은 매년마다 가을 신년에 성전의 건축을 재연하는 축제 때에 하나님의 궤가 성전을 떠났다가 주요 성소들을 순례하고 다시 예루살렘 성전으로 입성하는 과정을 노래하는 것일 수도 있다. 이렇게 성경의 증거와 고대 근동의 자료 등을 근거로 필자는 하나님의 궤의 덮개 위의 두 그룹 사이에는 솔로몬 성전 지성소에 있던 야훼의 신상의 축소판 야훼 신상이 있었으며, 하나님의 궤의 기본 기능은 이집트에서와 같은 행진을 위한 이동식 신상이었을 가능성을 제시하였다.

The ark of God appears in the Hebrew Bible as a symbol of the presence of God, a war palladium, or a device for divinatory practice, but in some literary strata such as P and D, it is nothing more than a wooden box. Moreover, it has been suggested that there were many arks inasmuch as the traditions about the ark are various and complex. This study argues that the ark was a portable divine image and there was a statue of YHWH between two cherubs over the cover of the ark based on biblical evidence, ancient Near Eastern materials concerning divine images, and archaeological evidence. The biblical passages discussed in this essay display that there was an annual festival in ancient Israel focused on the procession of the ark. Psalms 47 and 132 may have been songs that celebrate and reenact the entering of the ark into the temple after visiting major shrines of the nation. Such a procession of the ark can be easily explained in light of Egyptian and Mesopotamian parallels. Especially, Egyptian festivals involved the procession of the divine image carried by priests in a model barque. Ordinary people could have a rare opportunity to meet the deity and pose a personal question. The divinatory function of the ark may be explained in this perspective. In addition to the scholarly contribution of this study, it is hoped that its results may shed light on the ongoing discussion of the rise and development of aniconism in ancient Israel.
