하워드 써먼의 영성

The Spirituality of Howard Thurman

이 연구논문은 20세기 미국의 주요한 종교지도자 중 한 명이었던 하워드 써먼의 영성을 다룬다. 써먼은 미국사회의 주요 문제인 인종 간 격리와 차별을 극복하고 인종 간/문화 간 친교와 협력의 최초의 에큐메니컬 교회를 설립하였으며, 1960년대 흑인민권운동에 큰 영향을 주었다. 이 논문은 써먼의 영성이 갖는 기독교 영성 전통에 대한 공헌을 그의 신비주의와 사회적 실천의 통합 즉, 그의 신비가로서의 내면의 영적 삶과 예언자로서의 사회적 영성의 통합에 있다고 보고, 그의 내면적 삶의 영성과 사회적 영성을 연구하였다. 이 논문은 써먼에 관한 한국어로 된 최초의 연구로써, 그의 삶과 이력을 먼저 소개하고, 그의 내면적 영성을 기도와 살아있음과 자연신비주의의 영역에서 그리고 그의 사회적 실천을 연구하였다. 이러한 연구를 바탕으로 현대인들과 한국 교회를 위한 써먼 영성의 실천적 의미를 제시하였다.

This article deals with the spirituality of Howard W. Thurman, one of primary religious leaders in the 20th century America. Thurman established the first ecumenical church of interracial and intercultural fellowship and cooperation to overcome racial segregation and discrimination, and had a major influence on the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. This article thinks that Thurman’s contribution to the Christian spiritual tradition lies in the combination of mysticism and social action, namely the integration of his inner life of passion and his social practice. Therefore, the article explored his spirituality of inner life and that of social action. As the first research upon Thurman which is written in Korean language, the article introduced his life and career and investigated the aspects of prayer, aliveness, and nature mysticism in his spirituality of inner life and his social practice. The article suggested the practical implications of Thurman’s spirituality for the contemporary and the Korean church.
