Numinose of Emotion and Sympathy: Toward a ‘Korean Theology of Sympathy’

이 글의 목적은 감정 사회를 살아가는 현대 시대에 하나의 신학적 대안으로 한국적 공감 신학의 가능성을 제시하는데 있다. 이를 위해 감정과 공감의 누미노제(Numinose) 개념을 중심으로 기독교 사상과 샤머니즘 간의 종교적 대화를 시도한다. 기독교 전통에서는 슐라이어마허(F. D. E. Schleiermarcher)와 오토(R. Otto)의 사상을 중심으로 누미노제 개념을 살펴본다. 누미노제는 신과 세계와의 공감 속에서 지속적으로 탄생되고 각성되어지는 영적 체험이다. 오토에게 있어서 누미노제의 감정은 신의 개념보다도 더욱 근원적이고 본질적인 개념이다. 누미노제의 감정은 일상적 감정이 아니라 우주만물의 원초적 공감을 상호 연결시키는 본질적인 신비의 감정이다. 이 글에서 오토의 누미노제는 세 가지 관점에서 조명된다. 첫째, ‘피조물의 감정 ― 절대 소멸 감정,’ 둘째, ‘두려운 신비와 전율,’ 셋째, ‘신성한 유혹 ― 매혹성’이다. 오토의 누미노제 개념과 함께 한국적 공감 신학의 모티브는 기층 종교문화인 샤머니즘(샤먼적 전통)과의 대화를 통해 정립해 본다. 샤머니즘은 공시적 해석과 함께 한국적 신학의 ‘유용한 과거’ (usable past)로 해석된다. 샤머니즘의 누미노제도 세 가지 관점에서 고찰된다. 첫째, ‘고통 감정과 상징적 죽음,’ 둘째,‘강신의 원초적 공감,’ 셋째, ‘신성한 인연 ― 치유성’이다. 끝으로, 기독교와 샤머니즘의 종교 간 대화를 통하여 누미노제의 존재론, 인식론, 경험론적 해석을 주요 내용으로 미래지향적인 한국적 공감 신학의 가능성과 신학적 함의를 제시해 본다.

The purpose of this paper is to explore a possibility of ‘Korean theology of sympathy’ as one of the contextual Christian theologies in the contemporary emotional world. It begins by engaging in an inter-religious dialogue between Christianity and Shamanism focusing on the concept of ‘numinose’ of emotion and sympathy. I suggest that insights of F.D.E. Schleiermarcher’s ‘feelings of absolute dependency’ and R. Otto’s ‘numinose’ from the side of Christian tradition can lead to ‘making space’ in constructing basic tenets of the Korean theology of sympathy. For Otto, numinose is a more central concept than God, which is described as a ‘non-rational, non-sensory experience or feeling.’ Numinose is a mystical emotion of the ‘primordial sympathy’ that functions a real contact between God and the world. The divine emotion is objectified and manifested in and through fullness of feeling and aesthetic experience. Otto’s numinose shall be discussed in three points: first, ‘emotions of creatures-feelings of absolute emptiness,second, ’ tremendous mystery, third, ‘sacred lure-enchantment.’ There is affinity between numinose and spiritual ecstasy of shamans. Shamanism as ‘usable past’ plays pivotal roles in the development of Korean theology of sympathy in offering important theological motifs such as inter-relatedness of the divine and the world by mystical intuition, reinterpretation of suffering, healing, cosmic harmony, and communal spirituality. Shamanism shall be discussed in three points as well: first, ‘feelings of suffering and symbolic death,’ second, ‘shamanic possession and sympathy,’ third, ‘sacred karma-healing.’ A final set of three chapters examines the core ideas of Korean theology of sympathy with an emphasis of the ontological, epistemological, and empirical connotations of the numinose as fruits of the inter-religious dialogue of Christianity and Shamanism.
