A Comparison of the Thought of Justice in Jesus and Soowoon: A Confluence of the Two Stories by the Conception of Minimal Justice

이 논문은 동서양의 대표적인 사회변혁 종교인 그리스도교와 동학의 시조 예수와 수운 최제우의 정의 사상을 이 두 분의 이야기들의 플롯을 분석함으로써 밝히고 있다. 플롯을 분석하면 이야기가 전하고자 하는 메시지가 분명해 진다는 점을 착안하여 플롯 분석을 통해서 예수와 수운의 두 이야기들을 비교하고 합류시키려고 한다. 연구자의 연구진행방식은 우선 정의(justice)를 어떻게 이해하고 있는가를 밝히고 있다. 즉, 독일의 정치철학자 라이너 포르스트(Rainer Forst)의 최대한의(maximal) 정의 개념에 대비되는 최소한의(minimal), 근본적인(fundamental) 정의 개념을 수용하고 활용하면서, 이를 예수와 수운의 이야기에 적용시켜보는 방식을 택하고 있다. 또한 이 연구는 이야기 접근방법을 택하고 있는데, 특히 이야기의 갈등과 위기를 중심으로 분석하여 이를 통해서 이야기가 우리에게 전달하고자 하는 의미를 분명하게 파악할 수 있음을 보여주고자 한다. 예수와 수운과 갈등하는 적대자들을 초인격적인 존재인 사탄과 귀신, 세상적인 권력, 그리고 민중 혹은 뭇 대중으로 나누어 분석하였다. 그리고 그러한 갈등 속에서 나타나고 있는 위기를 이야기가 어떻게 풀어나가는가에 주목하였다. 이 분석의 결과로 예수의 중심 메시지는 하나님의 나라이며, 그것의 중심에는 인간들 사이의 올바른 관계 즉 관계적 정의가 자리하고 있다는 점을 발견하였다. 이와 비슷하게 수운의 이야기 속에서, 그의 중심된 사상은 시천주 사상으로서 모든 사람이 동등하고 귀중한 존재라는 관계적 정의를 함축하며, 좀 더 구체적인 관계적 정의 사상은 수운의 확대된 가족 개념에서 발견될 수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 관계적 정의는 곧 최소한의 근본적인 정의를 가리키며, 예수와 수운은 이러한 정의론에서 합일되고 있음을 밝힌다.

This study attempts at discovering the ideas of justice in the stories of Jesus and Soowoon Choi Jaewoo, the founding fathers of Christianity and the Donghak, the religions of the West and the East respectively. It attempts at revealing the ideas of justice of the two founding teachers by analyzing the plots of the stories about them. The study compares the two stories, and at the same time finds commonalities of the two stories on the idea of justice. This study suggests that the two founding figures from different contexts and different languages (meaning systems), commonly held highly the relational justice as the foundation of a hoped-for society. The author understands that there can be two stages and conceptions of justice. They are the minimal, foundational justice and the maximal justice. He borrows these ideas from German political philosopher Rainer Forst. He applies the idea of minimal and fundamental justice to Jesus and Soowoon, and sees if the two religious leaders had such an idea of justice in their own teachings. He employs the method of narrative analysis in order to make clear what the stories try to stand for. He believes that exposing the conflicts and suspenses of the stories can help clarify the main messages of stories. The study analyzes conflicts of Jesus and Soowoon respectively with superhuman powers such as Satan and evil spirits, worldly powers, and the multitude. It keeps eye on how the narrators deal with and resolve the suspenses and conflicts in the stories. As a result, the study arrives to the fact that the key of Jesus' teachings is the Kingdom of God, where the right relationship or relational justice among individuals and groups is at the center. Very similarly, in the stories of Soowoon, the study concludes, the idea of Shichonjoo (Attending the Heaven) makes all people, regardless of sex, age, status, and classes, equally regarded as esteemed humans.
