갑오경장(1894)까지 한국의 공식적인 글은 한문이었고 한국의 식자층은 한문성경을 굳이 한글로 번역하지 않아도 읽을 수 있었다. 따라서 한글로 번역된 성경이라야 한국 성경이라는 시각으로 한국의 성경해석사를 1900년대로 설정하여 시작하는 것은 성경 해석사를 과도하게 축소시킨 것이다. 한국인이 한문성경을 읽고 해석해온 시기를 '한문성경기(漢文聖經期)'라 이름을 짓고 그 시기를 잠정적으로 1900년까지로 설정한다. 본 연구의 목적은 '한문성경기' 동안 성경이 어떻게 번역되었고 한문성경이 어떻게 해석되어 왔는지 그 특수한 현상을 추적하여 연구하려는 것이다. 한문성경 번역의 역사는 경교가 들어온 당나라 시대까지 거슬러 올라갈 수 있으며, 16세기 말부터 중국으로 들어온 천주교 신부들에 의해 성경이 부분적으로 번역되었다. 성경전체가 본격적으로 번역된 것은 19세기 개신교 선교사들에 의해 진행되었다. 불과 몇 년간의 시차를 두고 중국 서적을 수입해온 한국이었기에 중국에서 번역된 한문성경은 한국에 유입되어 많이 읽혀졌다. 한국의 식자층들이 한문성경을 읽을 때 구결을 달아 해석을 하면서 읽었으며 독음형식으로 읽었다. 구결을 단 성경의 대표적인 경우가 이 수정의 현토성경이다. 또한 성경을 해석하고 내용을 전파할 때도 한시(漢詩)로 작성하여 전파하였는데 그 대표적인 경우가 『성교요지』이다. 한문성경은 중국성경이면서 동시에 한국성경이기도 하였다. 한문성경해석기의 여파는 언해(諺解)를 통해 한글 성경 번역에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으며 오늘날까지도 국한문성경이라는 모습으로 그 영향력을 발휘하고 있다.

Untill Gapohgyungjang(1894), Korea's official script consisted of Chinese characters and Korean scholars were able to read without translation to Hangul. Thus, dating the history of Korean Bible interpretation from the year 1900 under the assumption that the Korean Bible should be the Hangul Bible is an excessively limited view of the history of Korean biblical interpretation. I call the period that Koreans read and interpreted the Chinese character Bible as the Chinese character Bible period. The purpose of this article is to trace the specific phenomenon of translation and interpretation of the Chinese character Bible during the Chinese character Bible period. The history of Chinese character Bible translation can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, when Nestorianism was introduced to China. Biblical translation began with partial translation by Catholic priests in the late 16th century. The entire Bible was translated in the 19th century by Protestant missionaries. Because Chinese books made their way to Korea within only a few years, the Chinese character Bible was introduced and widely read in Korea. Korean scholars pinned gugyeol(口訣) to the Chinese character Bible and read the pronunciation. A representative of the Bible with gugyeol was the Hyunto Bible of Lee Soo Jung. Chinese poetry was also used in interpretation and propagation of the Bible, an approach represented by the Sunggyo-yoji(聖敎要旨) The Chinese character Bible was also a Korean Bible. The aftermath of the Hanmun Bible period has had a profound impact on Hangul Bible translation through Eonhae(諺解) and is influential as a Korean Chinese character (gukhanmun[國漢文]) Bible even today.
