Epistemological Implications of Paradigm Change : Toward Interdisciplinary, Theological Dialogues

본 소고는 토마스 쿤의 패러다임 변화이론을 신학 분야에 적용한 한스 큉의 과학과 신학의 인식론적 유사성과 차이점을 통해서 학제간, 신학간 대화를 실현하는데 도움이 되는 인식론적 요소들을 다음과 같이 제시한다. 첫째, 패러다임 변화의 인식론이 제시하는 지식의 해석학적, 잠정적 성격은 과학적(객관적, 실증적, 보편적) 지식과 신학적 지식(주관적, 실존적, 고백적)의 이원론적 인식론의 한계를 비판한다. 둘째, 과학과 신학의 인식론적 유사성은 에드워드 윌슨의 통섭이론의 생물학적 환원주의의 한계를 비판하고, ‘진리의 순수한 객관성’과 ‘진리의 극단적 상대성’을 넘어서 ‘진리의 상황성’을 밝혀줌으로써, 학제간의 대화의 과정 안에 사실과 가치, 객관성과 주관성, 이성과 감정의 인식론적 요소들의 상호작용을 강조한다. 셋째, 과학과 신학의 인식론적 차이가 제시하는 신학의 패러다임 변화의 진화적 불연속적 연속성은 신학의 배타적 절대주의와 역사적 상대주의를 넘어서 신학간의 참된 대화의 토대를 제공한다. 넷째, 신학간 대화를 구체화할 수 있는 인식론적 요소들로 기독교의 역사성, 성서(일차적 내적 권위)와 신학(이차적 기능적 권위)의 관계, 계시체험의 상대적 절대성, 신앙, 믿음과 신학의 역동적 관계성을 제시한다. 끝으로 패러다임 변화의 인식론이 제시하는 지식의 해석학적, 잠정적 성격, 그리고 과학과 신학의 구조적 유사성과 차이점이 제시하는 인식론적 함의는 학제간, 신학간 대화의 필요성, 가능성 및 기회를 구체적으로 높여줄 것이다.

This paper, based on epistemological analogies and differences between natural science and theology into which Hans Küng applied Thomas Kuhn’s theory of paradigm change, suggests epistemological factors contributing to interdisciplinary and theological dialogues as follows. First, hermeneutical and provisional character of knowledge which theory of paradigm change reveals criticizes dualistic epistemology of scientific and theological knowledge. Second, epistemological analogies between natural science and theology criticize biological reductionism of Edward Wilson’s “Consilience” and then stresses contextualization of truth and interaction of epistemological factors between fact and value, objectivity and subjectivity, reason and emotion, beyond pure objectivity and radical relativism of truth claim. Third, evolutionary discontinuous continuity which epistemological differences between natural science and theology reveals provides the epistemological foundation for authentic dialogues between theologies beyond theological exclusive absolutism and historical relativism. Fourth, it suggests epistemological factors for authentic theological dialogues as follows: historicity of Christianity, mutual relation between scripture and theology, relative absolute of revelation as intersubjective encounter, dynamic relations between faith, belief and theology. Lastly, an epistemology of paradigm change and its hermeneutical and provisional character of knowledge, and epistemological analogies and differences between natural science and theology will enhance the necessities, possibilities and opportunities of interdisciplinary and theological dialogues in the epistemological dimensions.
