히에로니무스 전도서 주석의 알레고리적 특징에 대한 재평가

Reassessment of the Allegorical Feature of Jerome’s Commentary on Ecclesiastes (Commentarius in Ecclesiasten, S. Hieronymi Presbyteri)

히에로니무스의 전도서 주석 (Commentarius in Ecclesiasten, S. Hieronymi Presbyteri)은 주석방법론과 그 내용에 있어서 우리에게 많은 영감을 주는 자료임에도 불구하고 이에 대한 관심과 연구가 부족한 것이 현실이다. 그 중요한 이유 중의 하나가 히에로니무스 전도서 주석에 대한 부정적이고 단순한 평가 곧 히에로니무스 주석은 알레고리 주석이라는 단순한 평가에 있다. 필자는 이러한 평가에 대한 직접적인 반박적 대답 곧 특정 본문들이 알레고리적 해석이 아니라는 직접적인 변호적 설명 대신, 그 이외의 내용들 곧 문자적 해석을 담지하고 있는 히에로니무스의 일반적이고 보편적인 해석의 내용들의 특징들을 검토함으로써 히에로니무스 주석의 특징을 재평가하려 하였다. 필자는 이를 위해 히에로니무스 전도서 주석 3장을 표본 본문으로 실제적으로 그 내용을 살펴보았고, 이를 보완하기 위하여 그의 주석 12장 전체에서 알레고리적 해석의 비중을 정량적으로 검토하여 히에로니무스 주석이 일반적으로 생각하는 것처럼 알레고리 중심적 해석이 아니라는 점을 증명하려 하였다. 그 정량적 검토 결과에 따르면, 주석 총 줄수 3,799줄 중 622줄만이 알레고리적 해석이다. 이것은 백분율로 전체 줄수 중 16.4%만이 알레고리적 해석임을 보여준다. 히에로니무스의 주석에서 알레고리적 해석은 전체의 1/5이 되지 않았고, 그의 주석의 대부분은 문자적 해석을 바탕으로 한 해석이었으며, 본문의 상호연관성(intertexuality)과 정경적 관점(canonical view)을 전제로 한 부연설명 내지는 확대해석이라는 특징을 가지고 있었고, 알레고리적 해석의 내용도 문자적 해석을 바탕으로 한 것이며, 그 내용도 신약의 내용을 벗어나지 않고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 히에로니무스 전도서 주석에 대한 기존의 알레고리적 편견을 극복하는데 일조하고자 하였다.

Commentarius in Ecclesiasten, S. Hieronymi Presbyteri, is one of the most important insightful sources for the interpretation of the Book of Ecclesiastes. But it has been much neglected so far. I think one of the most important reasons for this negligence is the negative and oversimplified view on it, that is, it has been regarded as an obsolete allegorical interpretation. Concerning it, I tried to clarify the particularities of Jerome’s commentary by examining the general contents of his interpretation which contain his literal interpretation, rather than the negative approach in answering to the argument regarding Jerome’s interpretation as too much allegorical. I tried to demonstrate that his commentary is not so much allegorical as it has been commonly believed, first by showing the opposite facts through the analysis of the sample text, Jerome’s commentary on chapter 3, and then, by examining quantitatively the weight of the allegorical interpretation in all of his commentary of Ecclesiastes(12 chapters).
