De Imitatione Christi' and The Spiritual Exercises: Deep Unity in Radical Asceticism

본고는 이냐시오 데 로욜라의 영성을 그리스도교 영성의 사상사적 맥락 안에서 더 깊이 이해하려는 역사적 연구의 일환으로 토마스 아 켐피스의 『그리스도를 본받아』와 이냐시오의 『영신수련』 사이의 근본적인 연속성에 초점을 둔다. 『그리스도를 본받아』는 중세 말기의 ‘새로운 신심’ 운동이 낳은 신심저술의 걸작으로 만레사에서의 이냐시오의 영적 발전에 결정적이었다. 더욱이 이냐시오는 전 생애를 통하여 그 책에 담긴 수덕 정신과 가르침에 완전히 동화하였다. 본고는 이냐시오가 만레사에서 자신의 고유한 영적 삶의 방식을 발견할 때 결정적 역할을 한 식별의 원리를 터득함에 있어서 『그리스도를 본받아』가 일차적인 문헌적 매개였다는 논지에 대한 논거를 제시한다. 그 저술이 이냐시오의 고유한 영성의 기원과 형성에 미치니 그 영향이 지금까지의 연구에서는 충분히 이해되고 있지 않다. 본고는 또한 『그리스도를 본받아』가 이냐시오 영성의 수덕의 핵심을 제공하였다는 사실을 구체적으로 보인다. 그러기 위해 그리스도를 따르고 본받음, 수덕의 실천, 다양성 안에서 하느님과 늘 하나되어 있기, 신비적 은총에로 열린 철저한 수덕주의와 같은 주제들을 연구하여 두 영성의 수덕신학 사이의 깊은 일치를 논증한다.

This paper is part of historical studies aiming at better understanding of Ignatian spirituality in the light of the history of ideas in Christian spirituality. It focuses on the aspect of essential continuity between Thomas à Kempis' De lmitatione Christi and Ignatius of Loyola's The Spiritual Exercises. De lmitatione Christi, a masterpiece of devotional writings originated from 'Devotio Moderna', was decisive to Ignatius' spiritual development at Manresa. Moreover, throughout his life he continued to assimilate completely the ascetical spirit and doctrines contained in the book. Thomas à Kempis' masterpiece was the primary literary mediation for Ignatius' attainment at Manresa of 'principle of discemment' that played a decisive role in his discovery of his own mode of spiritual life orientated to apostolic activity. For this thesis, the paper shows that there are enough literary evidences. This aspect of De lmitatione Christi's influence on the origin and formation of Ignatius' own spirituality has not been so far clearly understood in Ignatian scholarship. Furthermore, the paper shows concretely the fact that De lmitatione Christi also provided Ignatius with essential ascetical foundations for his spirituality. It, thereby, argues for deep unity in ascetical theology between two spiritualities by visiting such crucial subjects as 'following and imitating Christ', 'ascetic practice', 'always being united to God in multiplicity', and 'radical asceticism open to mystical graces.'
