The parable of pounds(Lk 19:11-27) has been interpreted by the dominant Western theologians as the legitimation of capitalism from the perspective of the elites. However, this paper intends to read the parable as the critique of the exploitive and oppressive system from the perspective of the peasants and workers. It criticizes the nobleman in the parable as an idol worshiper in terms of the exploitation of the poor peasants through his unjust capital management and political oppression, but it also perceives the third servant positively as a protester against his fetish master as well as the ruling system. It is important to remember the pain and hope of the victims who had to be killed on account of their resistance against Archelaus. Jesus is about to be crucified in Jerusalem by the ruling power elites like Archelaus or the nobleman. It is necessary for the hearers of Jesus to discern the reality of the idol in the economical and political system during this time and to decide to choose not the behavior of the first two servants who collaborated with the greedy master, but the behavior of the third servants who protested against him. This parable helps also the modern audience see the reality of the globalization of the market economic critically and resist against the idolization of capital.
