In this paper the writer is going to look into the relationship of the gospel and the law in the Deuteronomy. There are many people who believe that there is the law in the Old Testament, but the Gospel begins to appear in the New Testament for the first time. Some Christians believe that the law is no more useful for the Christians living in the New Testament era. Many Protestant Christians believe "we are saved by faith alone." Are all these opinions right? In this paper the writer is going to point out there are the law and the gospel in the Deuteronomy i.e in the Old Testament and these two are related inseparably. Ch. 1-11 of Deuteronomy reveal that Exodus and the covenant in Sinai are events of the grace of God. Therefore, we can say that Exodus and the covenant in Sinai are events of the gospel. The events of Exodus and the covenant in Sinai are the events of justification of Israel by faith like the justification of Abraham by faith. The laws in Ch. 12-26 of Deuteronomy are parts of the gospel which asks Israel to respond to the events of grace of God. Israel has to show her righteousness by obeying the laws of God(Dt. 6:25). This is matched with the intention of Jesus Christ(Matt. 7:21-27: 25:31-46), Paul(Gal. 5:19-26) and James(James 2:14-26) who ask the righteousness of works in addition to the righteousness of faith. Exodus and the covenant in Sinai in Ch. 1-11 on the one hand, and the laws in Ch. 12-26 on the other hand are not two, but one. In this sense it can be said the laws in Ch. 12-26 are parts of the gospel like the gifts of God in Ch. 1-11. K. Barth, who understands the relationship between the law and the gospel correctly, says: "Das Gesetz ist nichts anders als die notwendige Form des Evangeliums." In the same context Georg O. S. B. Braulik says "Gesetz als Evangelium." We can say that the Book of Deuteronomy as a whole forms a perfect unified body in which the gospel and the law are crossed and mixed and forms one perfect entity.
