Ever since the beginning of capitalism, there has been a steady theological critique of liberalism; still, not much has been said about the new form of contemporary liberalism, namely neoliberalism. The author attempts to disclose the hidden philosophical, ethical, and theological foundation of economic neoliberalism, which is the defining paradigm for contemporary global capitalist economy, through a close investigation of the moral philosophy of F. A. Hayek, the winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Economics, popularly known as the founding father of neoliberalism. The author discloses that economic neoliberalism, in its deepest dimension, implies a naturalistic utopianism which regards the world as self-explanatory and self-redeeming, and argues that this self-enclosed secularism is never tolerable for any religion that believes in the beyond, the Ultimate, and the transcendental as the power and source for our historical renewal and hope.
