There has been a puzzle in the study of the patriarchal narratives in Genesis: why the Isaac narratives are si little and he is a weak figure? This essay offers an answer by reading the Rebekah narratives wuth rhetorical criticism: not Isaac, but Rebekah is given the task of transmitting God's promise and blessing to the appointed heir, Jacom. So Rebekah's character and actions fit this unique role. She was the representative of her generation. She is comparable to Abraham in several points. She belongs to the formula of the fod of "Abraham, Rebekah and Jacob."
