Through research on the graves, burial practices and articles buried in graves during the Old Testament period, we can understand the thought of the ancient Israelites concerning mortality and death. Unlike the prople of Canaan or Philistine, the type of grave commonly used by the ancient Israelites was a cave transformed into a Bench-grave. The Bench-grave was a kind of family cemetery that could be used for long periods of time by a family or clan. Many different tupes of articles buried in the graves have been excavated along with the corpses. These articles were goods commonly used by the ancients during their lifetimes or decorations for the grave. the former had the function of cherishing the memory of the deceased, the latter had the function of watching for the religious world of the ancients. The important fact to notice here is not that these grave accessories display the unique characteristics of the religion of Yahweh, rather the fact that they demonstrate the form of folk religion or family religion.
