1998년 벨파스트 합의안 이후 북아일랜드 평화교육의 새로운 조건

This paper focuses on exploring the historical condition of peace education in Northern Irland after the Belfast agreement 1998 in terms of peace process, transition of Education for Mutual Understanding to Citizenship Education and the special emphasis on the education of reconciliation in the communities. The methodology used for the research is the field survey in Northern Ireland 13-20 June 2002 with depth interviews of the peace educators. Any conflict has its deep root. In Northern Ireland it inaugurates former colonization to the UK in the 12th century. During the last 800 years of colonization, Northern Ireland had been terribly divided according to the religious root, Catholic and Presbyterian both. The recent violence during the last 30 years of history from both sides had been terminated until the 1998 peace agreement. Approximately 4,000 Irish died and 40,000 wounded due to the antagonistic confrontations violently. In order to remove violent actions such as ignorance, prejudice, hatred, and hostility against both sides, peace education has been testified in the name of education for mutual understanding. It was a meeting together model between two hostile sides from the early age to make friends without being remote. Many NGO activities and schools followed EMU and in particular, the church leaders were very much enthusiastic in being involved in EMU in the cross-community relations. By the way there was coming a spring to make peace in Northern Ireland and its peak was the Belfast Agreement joined by various sects such as UK and Republic of Ireland, and political parties in Northern Ireland in 1998.
