This study was carried out for the improvement of germination rate by breaking seed dormancy in barley. In spring and fall planting, post-harvest treatment of seeds such as air-dried (24 hours) or soaked in the 100 ppm gibberellin for 10 to 30 minutes improved the germination rate. For the summer or the greenhouse planting, treatment of 100 ppm gibberellin or soaked in water at 10℃ showed good gemination. The gibberellin treated seeds showed the most effective for breaking dormancy. The emergency rate was different by the change of sowing seasons. The emergency rate of fall seeding was higher than summer seeding. The germination rate was much higher when incubated dormant seeds at 10℃ than 20℃. Combination treatment with gibberellin and lower temperature indicated that gibberellin increased germination rate to 85~92% at 10℃. Thirty days after harvesting, germination rates of seeds treated with or without gibberellin were not significantly different. Heading date, culm length and number of grains per spike were normal in the spring and fall seeding cultivations. However, those in the summer seeding were severely retarded due to summer depression.
