Selection Efficiency of Clones by Plug Cell Size in Early Potato Breeding Program

  • 2

The experiment was conducted to improve the selection efficiency in the first generation through the analysis of variation patterns of major tuber characteristics when raising hybrid seedling using the different plug cell size. The correlations in related to yield characteristics between the first and second generations were not found. However, highly-significant correlations for specific gravity was found in all different plug cell size. The most highly-significant correlation was showed in the tray with 32 holes. Therefore, suitable plug tray size for raising of hybrid seedlings in the first generation of potato breeding program was the plug tray with 32 holes. And the selection effect on specific gravity was confirmed as useful index to increasing the frequency of clones with high specific gravity, more than 1.080, in the following generation. The optimum selection intensity for potato clones with high specific gravity was obtained when adapting moderate selection intensity was 1.070 of specific gravity in the first generation.
