A new vegetable peanut cultivar “Baekan” (Arachis hypogaea ssp. fastigiata. L.) was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, in Milyang in 2005. It was developed from a cross between the disease resistant cultivar “Suwon95” and the high-yielding cultivar “Suwon91”. “Baekan” with a Shinpung plant type has less branch number with early flowering and long ellipse-shaped large kernel. Each pod with very shallow constriction had two grains with brown testa and 100 seed weight was 101 g in the regional yield trials (RYT). This cultivar also showed higher free sugar and protein contents in seed, and was more resistant to the early and late leaf spots and web blotch compared with the check one. In the regional yield trials, “Baekan” outyielded the check cultivar by 14% with 8.21 MT/ha for fresh pod and by 3% with 3.36 MT/ha for grain.
