A New Naked Waxy Barley Cultivar, “Donghanchal” with Good Quality and Resistance to Environmental Stresses

  • 2

A six-rowed naked barley cultivar, Donghanchal (Hordeum vulgare L.), with low-amylose, winter hardiness, viral disease resistance and good quality, was developed from the cross between the advanced line “Masangwamac/Kangbori*7” and Naehanssalbori in 1993. A promising line “HB88154-B-17-3-3-1-5-2” was selected in 1996. It performed well in the preliminary and advanced yield trials for three years from 1998 to 2000. The line was designated asIksan 58 through the regional yield trials (RYT) at seven sites for three years from 2001 to 2003. Its growth habit was winter type (III) with greenish leaves, thick culm, six-rowed and lax density of spike setting. Heading and maturing dates of “Donghanchal” were April 27th and May 29th, respectively and similar to those of check cultivar “Saechalssalbori”. Resistances to major viral disease and environmental stress such as BaYMV, cold and lodging were superior to those of check cultivar. Amylose, protein and β-glucan contents, water absorption rate, expansibility and whiteness of pearled grain were superior to those of check cultivar. Donghanchal showed 1,000 kernel weight of 29.0 g, and the number of spikes per m² and kernel length were similar to and longer than those of check cultivar, respectively. The average grain yield of “Donghanchal” in the regional yield trials was 3.78 MT/ha in paddy field, which was slightly higher (5%) than that of check cultivar.
