A New Naked Barley Cultivar, “Cheongho” with Resistance to Viral Disease and Powdery Mildew

  • 2

The six rowed and naked barley cultivar, “Cheongho” (Hordeum vulgare L.), showing earliness, good cooking quality, resistance to powdery mildew and barley yellow mosaic virus disease (BaYMV), winter hardiness, lodging tolerance, and high yield in paddy field, was developed at Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2004. It was derived from the cross between “Naehanssalbori” and “Shigoku 51”. Naehanssabori has a high yield with large grain, winter hardiness, and lodging tolerance, while Shigoku 51 has a good cooking quality, winter hardiness, and lodging tolerance. A promising line “HB14178-B-12-3” was selected in 1998 to be tested in the yield trials for three years from 1999 to 2001. The pedigree, Iksan 63, after being selected from the advanced yield trial, was given to the line to be submitted to the Regional Yield Trials at seven locations for three years from 2002 to 2004, showing superior resistance to powdery mildew and barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), and cooking quality to those of check cultivar, Saessalbori. Its growth habit was winter type (III) with greenish leaves, thick culm, six-rowed erect and medium kernel density of spike. It has 81 cm of culm length, 4.9 cm of spike length, 61 in grain number per spike, 606 in spike number/m², and 26.3 g of 1000 grains weight, respectively. Heading and maturing dates of “Cheongho” were April 20 and May 27 in paddy field, respectively, which were similar to those of check variety. This new variety showed resistance especially to powdery mildew in three tested sites and also to Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) in the three sites among four tested sites. Cooking quality of this variety was similar to the check cultivar Sassalbori in protein and β-glucan contents, water absorption rate, expansibility and whiteness of pearled grain. The average grain yield of “Cheongho” in the regional yield trials was 4.86 ton/ha in upland field, and 3.45 ton/ha in paddy field.
