A New Sweetpotato Variety for Food and Processing, “Juhwangmi”

“Juhwangmi” is a new sweetpotato variety developed from Mokpo Experiment Station, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2002, which was for the utilization as food and processing with orange flesh color of storage root. This variety was selected from seeds obtained by open polycross of SQ27 used as female in 1995, seedling and line selections were practiced from 1996 to 1997, and preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 1998 to 1999. The regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2000 to 2002. Juhwangmi has moderately lobed cordate shape of leaf, green vine and petiole, green axillary of vine, elliptic shape of storage root, dark red skin and orange flesh-color of storage root. The average yield of storage root was 28.1 ton/ ha in the regional yield trials, which was 5% higher than that of Sinhwangmi variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 3.8, and the average weight of one storage root was 148 gram. β-carotene content of Juhwangmi storage root was 21.5 mg/100 g higher than 18.6 mg/100 g of Sinhwangmi. This variety can be planted in all sweetpotato production regions.
