Dongjin 1 is a new Japonica rice variety developed from the cross between Hwayeongbyeo, a disease resistant and good quality rice variety and HR12800-AC21, a short-culm and high yielding rice line in 1992 and, thereafter, followed by generation advance through pedigree breeding method from 1993 to 1998, and finally named as Dongjin 1 on the basis of performance of replicated yield trial and local adaptability test. This variety has 145 days’ maturing habit from seeding to harvest, 5 days earlier than Dongjinbyeo, in the west southern plain area of Korea. It has short culm, many panicle number per unit area and spikelet number per panicle, high ripened grain ratio and brown/rough rice ratio, and medium size of brown rice. This variety is moderately resistant to leaf blast and grows more resistant under subsequential seeded blast nursery test, also resistant to bacterial leaf blight but susceptible to major virus diseases and insect pests. Brown rice of Dongjin 1 is translucent with non-glutinous endosperm, 19.6% amylose content, 7.7% protein content, and 1.25 Mg/K ratio. Especially, cooked rice of this variety is excellent. The percentages of milling recovery and the perfect milled rice grain of this variety are 76.6% and 96.3%, respectively. The yield performance is about 5.54 MT/ha, 6% higher than that of Juanbyeo in 5 tested sites under wet direct seeding, and 5.67 MT/ha, 9% higher than Dongjinbyeo, in 11 tested sites under ordinary transplanting and standard nitrogen level of regional adaptability test during three years from 1999 to 2001. This variety would be adaptable to wet direct seeding in the southern plain area and to transplanting in the southern plain area including Chungcheong province.
