발과 신발, 그리고 침대 밑 영역- 후안 호세 미야스의 『침대 밑을 보지 마』 연구

스페인 현대 소설가 후안 호세 미야스의 1999년 작 『침대 밑을 보지 마 No mires debajo de la cama 』의 중심소재는 발과 신발이다. 이 작품에서 우선 발과 신발은 커플을 상징한다. 하지만 커플 개념은 자유롭게 깨지고 짝은 홀로서거나 교체된다. 또 발과 신발은 바닥에 닿아 있기 때문에 침대 밑과 관련이 있다. 침대 밑은 이 작품에서 다른 규칙이 지배하는 환상적인 공간이다. 그래서 발은 환상과 실재의 다리 역할을 하며 신발은 생명력을 부여받아 그 두 세계를 넘나든다. 또 발은 신체의 극단에 위치하기 때문에 머리의 조절을 덜 받으며 그래서 쉽게 육체로부터 분리될 수 있다. 게다가 분리되는 발은 다른 개인과 교체되기도 한다. 신체의 일부는 미야스의 작품에서 정체성의 일부를 상징하기도 하는데 이에 따라 정체성의 일부가 타인과 교체되어 정체성이 분열하기도 하고 확장되기도 한다. 미야스는 이 작품을 통해서도 짝과 같은 절대적인 개념을 파괴하고 있으며 실재와 환상 사이의 경계 해체나 정체성 사이의 상호 흡수 등 다양한 시도를 이어가고 있다.

The main subjects of No mires debjajo de la cama (1999) written by Spanish contemporary novelist Juan José Millás are the feet and the shoes. Above all things and through this novel, the feet and shoes symbolize a couple. The author also sets up ‘under the bed’ as a symbolized space in which the feet and the shoes exist in our daily lives and rub the ground everytime as well. Therefore the feet could play the symbolic role as a bridge between the fantastic and the real world and the shoes move in and out of both worlds. And the feet are easily separated because they are located at the end of the human body and controlled less by the head. Millás reinterprets the static idea such as couple as various and other meanings and do several tests for breaking this stereotypical idea like erasing the border between fantastic and real worlds and shows us this relationship also reflects human identities as well.
