고령 반룡사(盤龍寺) 비로자나삼존불좌상

Vairocana Three Seated Buddhist Images In Banryong Temple(盤龍寺), Goryeong

반룡사는 경상북도 고령군 쌍림면 미숭산에 위치한 사찰로, 14세기에는 화엄종단에서 해인사에 못지 않은 위치에 있었으며 지금까지 법등이 이어지고 있는 유서 깊은 사찰이다. 최근 2009년에 이 사찰의 대적광전에 안치되어 있는 비로자나삼존불의 좌협시보살상에서 불상의 조성기(造成記)가 발견되어 이 불상이 수화원(首畵員) 혜희에 의해 1642년(숭정 15년)에 제작되었음이 밝혀졌다. 이 불상은 17세기의 전형적인 착의(着衣)형식을 따르면서도 본존의 하반신 옷주름을 보다 사실감 있게 표현하기 위해 흙을 덧대어 부분적으로 소조기법으로 처리한 점이 매우 독특하며 17세기의 불상으로서도 드문 예이다. 조성기에는 이 불상이 17세기 후반의 대표적 화원으로 알려져 있는 혜희에 의해 1642 년에 조성된 것으로 기록되어 있어 이 작품은 그의 가장 초기의 것으로 이해된다. 그런데 조성기에는 혜희와 함께 17세기 대표적 화원의 한명인 조능이 보조화원으로 등장하고 있어 주목된다. 근래에 혜희와 조능의 작풍이 서로 유사하다는 점 때문에 이들의 관계를 규명하려는 시도가 있어왔지만 이번 조사연구를 통해서 이로서 이들의 유사한 작풍이 스승 법령의 영향 외에 혜희와 조능 두 사람의 상호관계가 중요한 원인으로 작용했음을 이해할 수 있게 되었다.

Recently in 2009, a document for production was found from the left Buddhist statue of the Vairocana Three Seated Buddhist Images(毗盧遮那三尊佛坐像) located in me Dae-jeok-Gwang-jeon(大寂光殿) of the temple, showing that the images were produced by Hyehee(慧熙) who was Su-Hwa-won(首畵員) in 1642 (the 15th year of Sung-jeong 崇禎). These statues are unique among those made in the 17m century: they show the traditional way of putting on clothes of me 17m century, but earth was added in order co realistically express the cloth wrinkles of the lower half of the principal statue as partial plastic artistic technique. The document says these statues were produced in 1642 by Hyehee, a representative artist of the 17th century, indicating the statues were one of his earliest works. Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that the document says that Joneung(祖能) one of the representative monk artists with Hyehee in the 17th century, was assistant artist. There have been attempts to identify the relationship between the two because they had similar style, bur from this research, it can be understood that this similariry may be caused not only by effects of their master Beobryeong(法靈) but their interrelationship.
