陶隱 李崇仁의 유학사상과 節義 실천

Doeun Lee Sungin`s Confucian Thought and Practice of Fidelity to His Principle

본 논문은 고려 말의 시대적 전환기에 도은(陶隱) 이숭인(李崇仁)이 유가철학 및 성리학을 표준으로 삼아 실천한 절의(節義)의 내용을 검토함으로써 그의 도덕적 실천이 지니는 시대적 보편적 의미를 해명하고자 하였다. 도은은 고려 말의 어지럽고 무질서한 시대적 상황에서 관료이자 학자로서 사회를 어떻게 바르게 이끌어갈 것인가 하는 고민을 하면서도 자신의 힘으로 어찌 할 수 없는 한계상황에 부딪쳐 끊임없는 갈등과 좌절을 경험하였다. 이러한 체험 속에서 그는 위기지학(爲己之學)의 이념을 가지고 무너져 가는 고려왕조에 대한 충렬과 절의를 끝까지 지킴으로써 고려의 충신으로 한 시대를 지탱하고자 하는 의지를 가졌다. 도은이 이러한 절의를 실천할 수 있었던 힘은 바로 유가에서 강조했던 선한 본성으로서 인의예지에 근거하여 이상적 질서를 지향한 강력한 도덕적 실천의지에 기인하는 것이라 하겠다. 결국 유가의 충효와 인, 예악의 도덕이념, 맹자의 호연지기와 대장부 개념, 그리고 의(義)와 리(利)의 구별, 선단(善端)을 회복하고, 선(善)으로 태평한 치세의 성취를 상징하는 「복괘(復卦)」와 「태괘(泰卦)」와 같은 것은 도은이 온갖 역경 속에서도 절의를 실천하고자 궁극적 귀의처로 삼았던 이상이라고 할 수 있다.

Lee Sungin translated fidelity to his principle into practice according to moral theory of Confucianism in a turning point of the times of the end of the Koryeo Dynasty高麗王朝. Therefore this essay tried to examine the universal meaning implied in his moral practice. Doeun was worried how to govern society of the time as bureaucrat and scholar in troubled and immethodical circumstances of the end of the Koryeo Dynasty. But he was confronted with an unavoidable critical situation and experienced continuous frustration and complications. In the experience like this, he had volition intending to bear up his time as loyalist of Koryeo by maintaining firmly allegiance to the Koryeo Dynasty with ideal for the purpose of learning to their own improvement. The capability through which Doeun could practice these fidelity to his principle based on the mighty moral practice will for the ideal order, which is derived from benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom as good nature emphasizing in Confucianism. In the last analysis, Confucian loyalty and filial piety, benevolence, moral ideal of propriety and music, concept of Mencius’ vast moral spirit and the great man, discrimination between righteousness and benefit etc, was the criterion on which Doeun counted ultimately for translation of fidelity to his principle into practice in spite of every adverse circumstances. He also regarded it as standard of act Gua such as Fu Gua[復卦] and T’ai Gua[泰卦] which symbol recover of beginning of goodness and its accomplishment.
