한반도 동남부지역 철기생산기술의 등장과 발전배경 -기원전 2세기~기원 1세기 자료를 중심으로-

Emergence and Development of Ironware Manufacturing Techniques in the Southeast Area of the Korean Peninsular

한반도 남부지역에 등장하는 최초의 철기생산은 기원전 2세기 대 동남부지역 주거지 내부에서 진행된 저온의 단야 공정이며 이후 늑도유적의 사례처럼 저온에서 고온조업을 아우르는 철기생산기술이 도입된다. 동시에 시기별 생산유구의 집중도도 달라진다는 점은 생산전문집단의 등장이 있었다는 것을 알려준다. 이는 낙랑군의 설치와 함께 나타나는 현상으로 한반도 서북부지역 이주민의 유입과 관련이 깊을 것으로 보인다. 기원전 1세기 대 울산 달천유적에서 철광석의 채광이 이루어지는 점은 안정적인 철기생산 소재를 공급받기 위한 독자적인 노력이 있었다는 것을 추정하게 한다. 더불어 철광석 채광을 시작하는 시기부터 제련 공정이 시도되었을 가능성도 있다. 한편 달천 광산의 개발 이전 철기생산소재의 유통은 요동지역 재지적 철기의 등장과 관련된다. 요동지역의 일부 유적에서 보이는 파편의 재가공 흔적과 시중 노남리유적의 괴련철을 생산한 제련로 존재는 안정적인 소재 공급처의 확보로 연결되며, 한반도 동남부지역 철기생산의 등장과 발전 배경이 된다. 이처럼 한반도 동남부지역 철기생산은 요동지역 재지적 철기생산기술과 소재의 유통을 배경으로 초보적인 생산이 시작되었고 이후 선진 기술의 도입과 함께 독자적인 제련기술을 보유하게 되었다고 추정된다. 아직 직접적인 근거가 되는 유적이 적어 가능성에 불과하다는 것을 지적하며 앞으로 새로운 자료의 등장을 기대한다.

It was the 2nd century B.C. when ironware started to be manufactured in the Southeast area of the Korean Peninsula. This first ironware was created within residential area using low temperature forging technique. As the Neuk-do site presents, however, the ironware manufacturing techniques were rapidly developed to embrace from low to high temperature forging process. In addition, the different concentration of production sites depending on time implies that there existed a group specialized in ironware production. This tendency appeared with the establishment of Lelang-jun (樂浪郡), which suggests that it must have been closely related to the influx of immigrants from the region. At the turn of BC and AD, it was found that iron ore was mined at the Dalcheon mine in Ulsan, which suggests that there was an effort to independently provide materials for ironware production. The beginning of iron ore mining also implies the first attempt of smelting process. Meanwhile, the distribution of ironware materials before the Dalcheon mine was developed was related to the emergence of regional ironware in Liaodong (遼東). The early background of ironware production in the Southeast area of the Korean Peninsula is based on the evidence of reprocess found in some sites of Liadong and the existence of the smelting hearth for sponge iron in the Nonam-ri site located in Shijung. In summary, the early ironware production in the Southeast area of the Korean Peninsula started with the background of the regional ironware manufacturing techniques in Liadong and the distribution of the materials, and then independent smelting techniques grew in the peninsula with the introduction of advanced skills. Only a few sites have been found to support this possibility directly so that it is expected to discover more evidences in the future.
