김진구 야담의 형성과 문체

The Formation and Writing Style of Kim Jin-gu’s Historical Tales

본 논문은 김진구 야담에 나타나는 이원적 문체를 통해 야담과 문체 간의 상관관계와 문체 변별의 의미를 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 김진구는 야담을 국한문체와 국문체로 변별하여 표기했다. 국한문체는 일부단어를 한자로 표기하는 방식을 취했다. 근대 개혁가의 사상과 실천에 관한 이야기와 지배체제 안에서 용력과 문식을 인정받았던 인물의 일화를 국한문체로 표기했다. 반면 창작 야담과 민간에 구전하는 이야기는 국문체로 표기하였다. 국문체로 구연 서술하여 민중의 발랄한 언어생활을 재현했다. 김진구가 야담에 따라 문체를 달리 표기한 것은 사실과 허구의 인식 차이 때문이다. 김진구는 사실인 이야기를 국한문체로 표기했다. 관련 인물에게서 직접 들었거나 그 자신이 이야기의 진실을 믿은 경우이다. 그리고 사실에 해당하는 새로운 지식과 사상을 대중에게 전달하는데 국한문체가 효과적이었다. 반면 상상을 가미한 창작 야담과 민간전승의 이야기는 사실을 담보하지 못하는 허구적 이야기에 가까워 국문체로 표기했다. 대중에게 이야기의 사실성을 굳이 각인시킬 필요가 없었기 때문인 듯하다. 또 외래와 전통의 정서 차이에 따라 다르게 표기했다. 근대 개화사상은 외래의 사상에 기반하고 있어 낯선 새로운 정서이기에 근대 개혁가의 이야기는 국한문체로 표기했다. 반면 전통적이며 민중적인 삶의 방식을 드러내는 인물의 이야기는 국문체로 표기하여 친근함을 유발했다. 나아가 판소리의 구연 사설을 차용한 국문체 표현은 전통적 정서를 최대화했다. 김진구 야담의 이원적 표기는 본인의 야담 인식과 대중의 정서를 고려해 의도한 측면이 강하다 할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to examine a correlation of unofficial historical tales with dual style of writing and a meaning of discrimination of writing style by researching unofficial historical tales of Kim Jin-goo. He designated modern reformer’s tales as a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in it and creative tales and orally transmitted literature as a Korean writing style. As it were, he designated differently by perception gap between fact and fiction. A tale on a civilized ideal and a realistic story were designated as a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in it, fictional and unfounded tales were designated as Korean writing style. Though he treated Chinese character as a foreign language, a mixed style of writing Korean and Chinese characters in it was effective to deliver new knowledge and thought based on facts to the public. He also designated differently by emotional distinction between tradition and foreign. In translation and adaptation of foreign publications, he designated core words as a mixed style of writing Korean with Chinese characters in it in order to vitalize the meaning of original. On the other hand, he designated Korean writing style when he expressed popular language and orally narrated way of pansori. Because it was effective to express the spirit of the Josen dynasty era. For search a reason, his choice of writing style by the existing state of things is regarded as hisintention.
