대학에서의 오픈북 시험의 의의와 난점 탐색

Exploring the significance and problems of the openbook examination in the university

본 연구는 급변하는 학습환경의 변화에 부응하는 작지만 강력한 방편의 하나로 오픈북 시험을 제안하고, 대학교의 맥락을 중심으로 오픈북 시험에 대한 교수와 학생들의 인식과 경험을 조사함으로써 오픈북 시험의 의의와 난점을 분석하였다. 인문학, 사회과학, 사범, 자연과학 및공학 계열의 교수 182명과 학생 494명을 대상으로, 바람직한 학습평가 방식에 대한 입장, 오픈북 시험이 지닌 기대 효과와 난점에 대한 견해 등을 구체적으로 조사하고, 그러한 인식이 응답 자의 주요 변인에 따라 유의한 차이가 있는지를 분석하였다. 전반적으로 교수와 학생들은 오픈북 시험의 의의와 효과에 상당히 우호적인 반응을 보였고, 특히 사범계열 교수와 학생들의 지지도가 가장 높게 나타났으며, 전공 계열 및 교과목의 수준 등에 따라 차별적인 효과를 지닌다는 견해가 많았다. 주요 연구 문제에 있어서 교수와 학생의 견해는 매우 일치하는 경향을 보였 고, 전공 계열, 수업내용관, 능력관, 오픈북 시험 경험 유무 등에 따라 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 조사 결과를 토대로 대학에서의 향후 학습평가 방식이 지향해야 할 방향에 대한 실천적 시사점을 논의하였다.

In an era of unprecedented change to the learning environment, we are obliged to reflect on the ecological validity and the consequential validity of the traditional closedbook examination. The purpose of this study was to explore the significance and problems of an alternative method of evaluation in the university. This method, the ‘openbook examination’ is considered to be a simple but powerful way to meet the demands of the rapidly changing society under the premise that students’ perceptions about assessment methods significantly influence their approaches to learning. For this purpose, 182 professors and 494 university students in Korea were surveyed to investigate their perceptions, expectation effects and the limitations of the openbook exam. The results were analyzed in relation to various variables such as the major, status, career or academic achievement, perspective on the contents of the instruction, opinion on the human competence, and the advanced experience of the openbook exam. The results showed that the significance of the openbook exam was acknowledged by most professors and students, while the opinion that the effects would be different according to the area and the level of the subject matters was also widely suggested. Finally, this study discussed the practical implications on the applying this openbook exam which is worthy of emphasizing in the age of ‘memory outsourcing’.
