최근 들어 설교자의 인격에 관한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 설교자의 인격이 설교의 효과적인 전달에 영향을 미친다는 것이다. 이렇게 설교자의 인격에 대해서 관심이 높아지는 이유는 한국교회 설교의 위기가 설교자의 도덕적 타락과 맞물려 있다고 진단하기 때문이다. 물론 설교자의 인격은 설교에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소이다. 하지만 이러한 강조가 지나칠 때 설교의 균형은 깨질 수 있다. 본 논문은 설교자의 어떠함이 설교에 영향을 미친다는 논의들이 자칫 범할 수 있는 위험성을 지적하고 설교자의 인격에 관한 균형 잡힌 시각을 제시 하고자 한다. 필자는 다음과 같은 이유들 때문에 설교자의 인격의 지나친 강조는 위험하다고 주장한다. 첫째, 인격이 좋은 설교자의 설교가 언제 좋은 것이라고 말할수 없으며 둘째, 인격의 객관적 평가는 불가능하며 셋째, 수사학에서 에토스강조는 설교학에서 받아들이기 어려운 약점을 가지고 있으며 넷째, 인격의 강조는 율법주의나 도덕주의 경향을 가져올 수 있으며 다섯째, 설교에서 하나님의 주권이 설교자의 어떠함에 종속될 위험이 있으며 여섯째, 도나투스 논쟁에 비춰볼 때 설교자의 어떠함이 설교의 권위를 결정지을 수 없다. 그렇다면 균형을 유지하기 위해 어떻게 해야 할까? 설교자의 인격 강조는 본문의 중요성의 지속적인 강조와 설교 안에서의 성령의 역사와 함께 강조될때 그 균형을 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
Recently, the interest in the personality of preachers has been increasing. The reason for the growing interest is due to a diagnosis of the crisis of sermons in the Korean church as a connection to the moral corruption of preachers. Inevitably, the personality of the preacher is an important factor influencing the sermon. However, when this is overemphasized, the balance of the sermon can be broken. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a balanced perspective on the personality of preachers, pointing out there can be risks in overemphasizing the personality of preachers. The writer argues that overstating the significance of the preacher s personality is dangerous for the following reasons: First, it cannot be proved that a preacher with a good personality will always deliver good sermons. Second, the objective evaluation of personality is impossible. Third, the perspective that emphasizes ethos in rhetoric is hard to accept in a homiletical perspective. Fourth, the overemphasis of personality can lead to the tendency of legalism or moralism. Fifth, the sovereignty of God in the sermon cannot be affected by the personality of the preacher. Sixth, the idea of Augustine for the Donatists demonstrates that the personality of preachers cannot determine the authority of the sermon. Then how can preaching in the ministry become more balanced? The emphasis on the personality of the preacher will find its balance when it is linked to the continuing emphasis on the importance of Biblical texts and with the influence of the Holy Spirit in preaching.
